He is deciding between CS5 and Flash Builder!

Make sure you are keeping up with CFUnited, Stellr and the Lansdowne Resort on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook!!!

Social Media Raffle - First Drawing

Hi everyone,

I'm proud to announce that Seth Tepfer has been chosen as the first social media raffle winner! He gets his choice of CF9 Enterprise, Flex or Creative Suite 5.

Seth was chosen randomly from our list of fans of our CFUnited page on Facebook!

That means our next two drawings will be pulled from Twitter followers (Lansdowne, CFUnited, Stellr), CFUnited Facebook event, CFUnited LinkedIn event, or being a fan of Stellr or the Lansdowne resort on Facebook.

So many opportunities - you better start clicking!

Since I have delayed in announcing the first winner, I will announce the next winner this Friday, July 2, 2010.

Golf Contest

Hello everyone,

As I have mentioned before, we weren't able to snag the free golf for everybody; however, the Lansdowne Resort was kind enough to let us raffle off a free round of golf! So here's the deal:

Send us a picture, video, or really anything of you related to golf to: newsletter(at)cfunited(dot) com, in addition to your registered name (so we know who you are!), with a subject line of: Golf Contest Submission.

Yes, it's that easy.

Only one (1) entry allowed per person. Those who would like to participate must be registered; this may be as an attendee, speaker or sponsor. Either way, the winner has to be registered for CFUnited. Please only submit if you plan to use the free round of golf! The coolest/most creative/most awesome/best submission decided by me will be chosen as the winner! All entries must be submitted by June 30, 2010 to be eligible.

The winner will receive a round of golf for a total of 4 players. The winner will be responsible for selecting the other 3 players. This prize is transferable, so if the winner changes his/her mind, they can pass it on to whomever they choose.

If you would like to be eligible for this prize, but have yet to register, please do so now!

Also, take advantage of Lansdowne Resort's very own Spa Minérale, where attendees get a 10 percent discount.

Good luck to all!

Guest Pass Changes and Hotel Prizes

Hello everyone!

As soon as we posted up the guest packages, we realized we were going to have some problems.

Long story short, the system was not going to work as we hoped. So we have a new system.

We are going to offer a guest package for $220, which will cover Wednesday through Saturday guest amenities, including lunch and evening events.

Of course, we know not all guests will want the whole week's worth of goodies, so we have discounts available for the guest packages.

Guest1 - $160 off - Use only if you want to use the guest package for either Wednesday or Thursday (1 day only).

Guest2 - $100 off - Use only if you want to use the guest package for Wednesday AND Thursday (2 days).

Guest3 - $50 off - Use only if you want to remove the Saturday from the guest package, and therefore would be applicable for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (3 days).

We have had some people asking about the golf and spa specials that the resort had offered last year. This year, the Lansdowne Resort will be able to offer 10% off all spa treatments.

Though not many people had taken advantage of the free golf that was offered last year, the Lansdowne Resort was kind enough to let us raffle off (1) free tee time! Stay tuned for more info about that!

Purchase your guest passes here!

Thanks everyone!

State of the CF Union results and winner

Thank you everyone who voted in the State of the CF Union survey. I noticed that many folks are not on the latest version of CF and are yet to adopt OO and frameworks. However CFC use is nearly universal. And open source products such as CFEclipse, MySQL and Railo are heavily used. Group learning resources such as user groups and conferences are used by the majority of developers.

Here are some of the interesting things I learned from the detailed results:

  • 80% of developers are using CF8, with about half that number using CF9
  • If you are running CF6 or earlier you are behind the curve
  • Nearly a quarter of developers are using the open source Railo ColdFusion
  • More than half are using Enterprise CF (vs Standard)
  • 80% run on Windows
  • A third use Fusebox with other frameworks such as Model Glue, Mach-II and ColdBox at 12-16%
  • While nearly everyone uses CFCs only a third use ColdSpring or similar to organize their CFC and only one in six do data via CFCs using ORM
  • UDFs, Custom tags and CFIncludes are still popular ways to reuse code but are starting to fall behind CFCs these days
  • Most developers have used CF for more than 6 years and over 90% use object orientation
  • CFers are heavily multi-lingual - using Flex, Java, PHP, AIR and .Net in large numbers
  • SQL Server remains the database of choice, with MySQL closely following. Oracle and Access runners up.
  • Two-thirds of developers use subversion, but a shocking 20% don't do source code control at all
  • CFEclipse, Dreamweaver and CF Builder are the top tools
  • Two thirds of developer attend a local user group some of the time
  • CFUnited is the most attended conference by CF developers, followed by MAX and CF.Objective()
  • The top challenges facing developers today is too much work, followed by maintaining someone else's badly written code and finding the time to learn new features.

And the winner of the ticket to CFUnited is Matthew Jones from Indianapolis IN. If you need to get on top of your backlog of work, learn new CF features, meet OO gurus or get up to speed on Flex or AIR then check out CFUnited.

A message from Ajay Sathuluri - Speaker

CFUnited is next week!

I'll be presenting on Wednesday on "Dynamic Load Testing with Webserver Stress Tool". I'll be covering Basic, parameterized, and scripted load testing. It's a fairly inexpensive tool, but can do some powerful testing.

This week I also found out I'll be able to raffle 3 software licenses: 2 licenses for Paessler Webserver Stress Tool, and 1 for FusionReactor server monitor! ($1000 worth of software). Licenses sponsored by Paessler and Intergral, respectively.

* Test Types

* setting up a set of URLs

* Multiple users

* URLs bound to a dataset (parameterize the tested URLs, merge with a dataset; one set for each user)

* Scripting, instead of list of URLs

* Simulate multiple simultaneous CF sessions

* How to simulate AJAX calls

* Test results and logs; where's the most useful information
