Evening Events at CFUnited

We are excited to announce our evenings events for this year's CFUnited:

On Wednesday night, from 7-9 pm, we are hosting a networking reception event in the Ballroom Foyer. Our reception is the most opportune time to meet and greet with our wonderful speakers and sponsors and of course, our attendees. Make sure you bring plenty of business cards! And don't worry, we will have a bar and passed hors d'oeuvres such as buffalo chicken skewers, vegetable spring rolls and curried wonton shrimp! yum!!

On Thursday night, Adobe will be hosting their Pool Party from 7:30 - 10:00 pm. Take a dip in any of the three refreshing and super awesome pools at the Lansdowne Resort. You may also enjoy the scrumptious cajun seasoned french fries (yes, we're bringing them back), chicken cashew spring rolls, roasted mushroom fritters and glamorous deserts! Make sure you bring your bathing suits!!

On Friday, our last night, the Lansdowne Resort will have a fabulous concert, as part of their Sounds of Summer Concert Series. To our luck, this week's band is The Reflex, an ultimate 80s tribute band! Cara and I will be rocking out in our leg warmers and cut off t-shirts - it's going to be rad, totally.

If you are already registered, but would like your spouse to take part in these awesome fabulous events, check out our packages for a guest pass!

Paul's Gravatar Is there going to be an open bar?
# Posted By Paul | 7/15/10 4:13 PM
Michael Smith's Gravatar We will give out a drink ticket for each event for your first drink of the evening and beyond that there is a cash bar.

Charlie Arehart's Gravatar They all sound great. Hey, will the Thurs night pool party have the open mic night like last year? That was great. I don't suppose the sumo wrestling will happen again or you'd have announced it (and I'm sure you're trying to keep costs low).

But the open mike was free to run of course, right? If it could still happen, I'll note that it could could use some amplification, if I recall. If you wouldn't be forced to rent from the hotel, I'm sure some attendee(s) could bring something along to help.

And if even organizing it is one more time challenge, I'd bet someone in the community would step up to help organize things before and at the event.

Let us know if it's a possibility, what help may be needed, etc.

Sid Wing's Gravatar If they give me enough heads up notice - I have a laptop and about 102,000 karaoke cuts that I can bring along with me. May even have a couple of spare mics - then just need a sound system and a spare monitor (for the lyrics). (Yes, I admit is - I am a Karaoke Host on the side)
# Posted By Sid Wing | 7/16/10 11:42 PM
Tara Kossari's Gravatar @Charlie - We don't have hotel AV at the pool this year. And yes, Sumo wrestling will not be there as the cost from the vendor is high.

I'm more than open to anybody wanting to organize/plan anything! Both Cara and I haven't had any extra spare time to plan anything else, so if anybody wants to put something together - that would be wonderful!
# Posted By Tara Kossari | 7/19/10 11:21 AM
Michael Smith's Gravatar @ Charlie and Sid: if you can organize an open mic and find someone who has a microphone and small amp then go for it! I appreciate you stepping up!

Larry C. Lyons's Gravatar Given that many of us are going to be arriving the Tuesday night, is there going to be any pre conference networking events on the Tuesday evening?
# Posted By Larry C. Lyons | 7/19/10 4:05 PM
Michael Smith's Gravatar @Larry We don't have any formal attendee events planned for Tuesday night but there are 3 bars and restaurants in hotel so if some wants to suggest one to hang out in or organize some other event go for it!

Jeff Coughlin's Gravatar I have some mics (including a really nice wireless one) that I can pack and bring if needed. I can't fit a PA, speakers, or mic stands in my luggage though, so you'll have to get those on your own :).

Ping me if you want me to bring the mics though (jeff [at] jeffcoughlin_com)

Vicky's Gravatar I will be keeping a list of all those who wish to perform. If you wish to perform, please comment in this thread or contact me directly via my blog's contact form.

I also have an SUV at my disposal, so if there is any equip that needs hauled in with me from MD to VA or can be picked up fairly conveniently, let me know that too!

Charlie, Sid and Josh are working out some karaoke equip. So looks like it will be a combo of karaoke and open mic... music? Comedy? (Ahem, Boyzoid!)

Awesome! Since CFMeetup guy stepped forth, I vote we call this the CFMicUp !

Vicky's Gravatar Maybe we can get Scott Stroz to do standup again, and I bet Matt would love to pre-record some kind of kick off or something, along the lines of #monkehRadio. (He's been doing things like the ColdFusion Playlist http://www.mattgifford.co.uk/the-coldfusion-playli... and streaming live with James to us CF Twitterers. :)
# Posted By Vicky | 7/22/10 12:19 PM
Vicky's Gravatar Scott Stroz confirms that he used a mic last year, so it's safe to say there is power *somewhere*. I'm bringing a 100' extension cord, fwiw!

I also asked Scott about doing his standup again. He says, "We'll see." I think if we buy him a few beers, we can get him to do it. ;)

Charlie Arehart's Gravatar Thanks for taking the reigns, Vicky. Just to clarify about Sid/Josh/me, it's not that we are only "working out some karaoke equip.". To be clear, Sid offered to do Karaoke, but has only his laptop and no sound gear. I knew Adam had gear (as a DJ) and may have even wanted to help do some music between Karaoke, and then when we heard word of your plans for getting people to perform, it seems possible that we can get it all going (and yes, of course, Scott's comedy).

But I want to caution people that we are still working things out, which is why I'd not stepped up to comment yet. I'll be talking to Josh later today. I'd just rather not have people start making plans to bring instruments, etc., until we clarify things.

Also, I'm not even sure that we have power in that pavillion. If not, then it would be a bust. I seem to recall last year that we had no amplification (could be wrong), which could have been for that reason. Does anyone know/remember/want to find out?
# Posted By Charlie Arehart | 7/22/10 1:59 PM
Scott Stroz's Gravatar I recall that there was at least a microphone and a speaker. The speaker was one that was mounted on a tri-pod looking thing.
# Posted By Scott Stroz | 7/22/10 2:29 PM
Vicky's Gravatar I am asking my husband to let me bring one of his guitars and know of at least one person there willing to perform with it. Figures what I don't have is an amp :)
# Posted By Vicky | 7/22/10 3:32 PM
Matt Gifford's Gravatar This sounds like you guys are going to have a blast, electricity or not :)

If you want me to throw something in to the mix, I'd be over the moon to stream a radio show for an hour or so with some songs to get you guys in the 80s mood.

Let me know, and I'll prepare 'the decks'
# Posted By Matt Gifford | 7/22/10 4:16 PM
Michael Smith's Gravatar Thanks everyone for helping out!

@Scott There is no microphone/speaker from hotel this year - we need to bring our own

@Matt There is no wifi in the pool area
# Posted By Michael Smith | 7/22/10 4:33 PM
Vicky's Gravatar Soon as Charlie has a handle on the equipment we do have, I will start looking hard in this area for that which we don't. Must be someone in the DC/MD/VA area with an amp??

I have an MBP and an AT&T USB stick for internet. If that can be connected to a good speaker, maybe streaming is possible. I'm guessing we'd see how much time we can fill with live stuff before figuring out how much time for streaming?

Even then, I have a decent set of speakers I can bring that would be better than nothing if we can't pull this off.. so Matt, I think you should do something pre-recorded that could serve as backup, and I'd be proud to haul my speakers along and play it at any appropriate opportunity where music might be needed during the week. I definitely think it'd be awesome to have a pre-recorded intro for these guys to play before the karaoke and stuff begins, even if only just end up needing a couple minutes.

Anything longer, I could still have fun with on an impromptu and appropriate basis. I really love what you did with the ColdFusion Playlist. Who else can craft such a thing? A must-have at this very special CF conf imo. It wouldn't go to waste.

Charlie Arehart's Gravatar OK, Josh and I have talked. I'll be going by his house tonight (we're in Atlanta) to get his speakers, amp, mixer, and 3 wireless mics. So if I can fit all that in my car (and leave room for stuff I need to bring up also), I'll be bringing it all up. :-)

Folks with instruments who want to jack into the mixer will need to bring their own cords--and chords. :-)

Josh has said that while he can't be sure he can be at the helm the whole time, he expects to be at the party at least long enough to help us get setup, and be available if needed from then on (and I have his mobile).

So it looks to be "Thunderbirds Are Go!"

I'll let you folks know about the equipment situation in the morning, if not tonight.

And I've got a new nickname for Vicky: Tenacious V! :-)
# Posted By Charlie Arehart | 7/22/10 7:00 PM
Vicky's Gravatar w00t! Charlie rocks!

I am bringing a Spirit Steinberger guitar (import) with some picks, a strap, and cord to jack it in.

Soon as I hear it all fits in your car, I will post & start gathering names of participants. Too cool. :) Thanks for enabling CFMicUp, Charlie. :)
# Posted By Vicky | 7/22/10 10:57 PM
Vicky's Gravatar lol @ the nick. I'm loving being so involved this year, tho. I'm still only working part-time at the moment, and i keep seeing opportunities at more and more CFUnited fun that I can't resist while I have the time. I think CFMicUp will be the ultimate, and I think this last CFUnited will be the best one ever. I'm proud to help and happy the staff has enabled me to go. :)

Chaz's Gravatar Hey guys since I am local and have been a DJ for both Radio and club for 10+ years I wouldn't mind either MCing the event as well as bringing my digital mixer and laptop with about 1TB of music.

My set up is really portable but we will need some speakers.
# Posted By Chaz | 7/22/10 11:19 PM
Charlie Arehart's Gravatar OK, just came from Josh's and I have (and will bring) his setup: speakers, mixer, mics. Again, musicians need to bring their own cords. We also have Chaz Chumley now who is also offering to bring his computer and music, so perhaps he and Sid can take places giving each other a breather.

CFMicUp is on. Come party with Tenacious V. :-) See y'all Thursday night by the pool party.

michael evangelista's Gravatar Go team! Sounds like all the ingredients for a good time. I can fill up a few minutes of guy-w-a-guitar time (after I empty a few glasses, preferrably) and can help w gear/sound/introductions or whatever. And if we're running through a central amp/mixer, can record the works too. Eager to see what talents float to the surface- don't be shy people!

Sid Wing's Gravatar @Charlie - Will have the Karaoke "rig" ready -
(read as Laptop, cables, and drives) - I have a fairly large selection of Karaoke - just can't afford to bring my DJ rig on the plane :-)
# Posted By Sid Wing | 7/23/10 10:20 AM
Sid Wing's Gravatar @Chaz - Sounds like a kool scenario - you handle the DJ music, I'll Handle the Karaoke (for those who are brave enough) - and we can work our plethera of various entertainers in too!

Just gonna point out: See what happens when you present a challenge (code or otherwise) to the CF Community! We ALWAYS rise to the occasion. :-)
# Posted By Sid Wing | 7/23/10 12:41 PM
Sid Wing's Gravatar Mebbe we should add a Tue or Wed BOF to get some basic planning done?
# Posted By Sid Wing | 7/23/10 12:43 PM
Chaz's Gravatar Anything in particular music wise you need me to bring - Hip hop, House, Rock, etc...
# Posted By Chaz | 7/23/10 12:44 PM
Larry C. Lyons's Gravatar House, trance etc would be good.
# Posted By Larry C. Lyons | 7/23/10 12:59 PM
Sid Wing's Gravatar @Chaz - I have rock and country (as well as some of the newer top 40 stuff) - If you wanna cover the House, Hip-hop, techno, ultimix, etc - that'd be GREAT!
# Posted By Sid Wing | 7/23/10 1:14 PM
Vicky's Gravatar Regarding BoF: I will be working with Stellr from around 6pm to 10pm on Tuesday night, but I should be available before or after. Wednesday, I'm at the reg desk from 8am to noon. Should be ok thereafter. Please not before. lol

Matt Gifford / #monkehRadio will be recording some stuff for us for a kickass intro and filler since streaming quality is in question.

Wow, this is so going to rock!
# Posted By Vicky | 7/23/10 1:52 PM
Charlie Arehart's Gravatar A meeting in advance to check out all the gear and connections might not be a bad idea. As long as the main music/karaoke setup is confirmed, we can probably wing it if some particular musician can't make that meeting (though if some can, with gear/chords, it would be good to test things.)

So the question is, when?

While I can't do Tuesday night myself (as there are both a speaker dinner and another reception I will be attending), perhaps if Josh were free he could handle setting up his gear. I'll reach out to him directly.

As for Wed night we already have the sponsor networking party from 7-9, and then the SciFi and Mango BOFs from 9:30-10:30. If the folks involved in this "pool party music bof/meeting" are free then, that may be our best chance.

Thurs is full on with sessions until 6:30, then a bof led by Chaz and others (and another on the next release of CF) until 7:30, then the party at 7:30.

That said, if it's like last year, most would hang out at the pool (where the food and drinks are) and would gravitate to the pavillion with the music only later (when the music started playing, really), so if we needed an hour to still get setup then, it shouldn't be a problem.

What do folks think?

BTW, beware that this blog is moderated, so comments may arrive hours after being posted (mine from last night only showed up this morning), so be careful to read them with that in mind, in case things seem "out of sync". (For instance, Chaz's post at 11:19 last night was not there when I wrote mine at 12:36am, and both arrived only this morning.)

Given the sense of urgency some may feel about making plans about all this, it just seems we're operating at a bit of a disadvantage, so keep it in mind.

Vicky's Gravatar I made a post calling for talent this morning. If you want to continue this discussion in the comment section over there, you only need to be approved the first time and then are free to post thereafter. I can approve pretty quickly, as I'm such a geek I'll stop in Safeway to mod from my phone. :P

Charlie Arehart's Gravatar If it wasn't clear from Vicky's last comment above, she created a new entry and discussion of planning for this CFMicUp event is now taking place on her blog entry:

See folks there Thursday night!
